Connecting to the Storage Server on Windows 7 (On Campus)

There are several ways of doing this:

1. If you have logged on to a school computer in a dorm or academic lab:

  • Open “My Computer”.
  • Look under the “Network Drives” section of the “My Computer” window.
  • Double-click the drive with your user name on it (ie, “sandoste on ‘storage:student_s_z’ H:”).

2. Open the Start Menu and click “Run…”

  • type \\storage
  • select the appropriate “student_x_y” folder as described in method #2.
  • open the folder with your username.

3. If you are on the ResNet using Windows XP or Vista:

  • Open “My Computer”
  • In the “Address” field towards the top of the window, type “\\storage.grinnell.edu\”
  • When prompted for your username and password, type “GRIN\username” for your username and your regular Grinnell password for your password
  • A large list of folders should appear
  • Select the appropriate “student_x_y” folder as described in method #2
  • Open the folder with your username
  • Here you will see a list of the files on your storage server
  • All the standard Windows commands should work for these files. They can be opened by double clicking, copied, pasted, saved, etc.

2. In the Finder (click on a blank area of the desktop and the upper left-hand corner of your screen should say Finder), click on the Go menu. 3. Under the Go menu, select Connect to Server option (Command + K for keyboard shortcut)

Connecting to the Grinnell Storage Server from Off Campus

To connect to Grinnell’s storage server from off-campus, you will need to use an FTP client that supports “FTP over TLS” (why don’t we use regular FTP?). If you have your own FTP client you would like to use, see the generic connection instructions below. If you do not have an FTP client already, Filezilla is a cross-platform client that supports FTP over TLS (and it’s pretty cool besides). For instructions on setting up FileZilla with the Grinnell storage server, see this page.

You can also browse the list of clients known to support secure FTP.

Generic Connection instructions

To connect to the storage server with your FTP client of choice, use the address ftpserver.grinnell.edu with port 21. When choosing a connection type, look for an option named “FTPES”, “Explicit FTPS”, “FTP over TLS”, or something similar. Your client must offer an option like this, otherwise the connection will fail. If you do not want to have to navigate to your directory every time you logon, you can set up the default remote directory in the “advanced” tab.

You may also encounter a message about an untrusted certificate. It is safe to accept this, and you may want to choose to always accept this certificate to avoid this message in the future.
